Stumbling across the members through each teams’ performance, they, s**t kingz, direct street dancers as a symbol of next generation. They have already accomplished great successes since a few years ago, which we could not imagine at their ages. They are structured s**t kingz with obtaining their energy step by step, such as meeting, one of the top dancers in the world, Shaun Evaristo, and sharing plenty of time with the good members. For dancers, you may encounter some impressed dance styles and learning them. They not only take over the dancing influence for us but also they have achieved, which are amazing. We would like to introduce them, with hoping their greater success in near future, from the beginning as dancers to their presents in “interview as the way they are”.

Could you tell us how s**t kingz starts?

shoji

We have started since October 2007 and this is the 4th year. Kazuki told us to start it. It was the motive for us.

oguri

One day, Kazuki and Noppo were talking in a train “we want to do something new, don’t we?”. Meanwhile kazuki and I were dancing in the same group, and shoji performed at the same events with us. Then Kazuki told us to start ‘s**t kingz’.

At the beginning, we started it only for one time. So we didn’t have our team name, “s**t kingz”, it was simply titled his name, his name and his name….

After the show, we wanted to create other performances then we set up our team ‘s**t kingz’guradually.

TDM

What does ‘s**t kingz’ come from at all?

shoji

hum……, incontinence. (*incontinence translates into ‘shikkin’ in Japanese.) (hehe)

We talked that we wanted to show our dynamic performances for audience as much as they pissed. (hehe)

For the first time, we called ourselves “shikkin”, though we were getting to be known to people. Then we had to change our team name, ‘s**t kingz’ came up because it was close to “shikkin”. But no one agreed with us. (hehe)

oguri

shoji-kun’s girlfriend agreed to the idea, and she said “‘s**t kingz’is cool, isn’t it? Cool.”.

shoji

But it should be king of shit!(haha)

Nevertheless, we did not imagine to go abroad, and we thought it was for one time.

As we go overseas, everyone asks us what the name comes from. (hehe)

We cannot say or write it directly in the U.S.A., then it was simply typed “sikkin ”. But at present, we asked to express as ‘s**t kingz.'

TDM

I see. Could you tell us your processes so far for each?

noppo

I have started dance at elementary school, and was doing rocking dance at first.

Then I met kazuki, who went to and danced at other studio, at big events. Thus I have seen him for more than ten years.

I watched his performance at the same year as me, on stage jointing other studios, was completely different from what I did, then I thought “his dance is so cool with such foreign sounds.” (haha)

I quitted dancing at junior high school for a while and messed about. In the course of time, I got keen to re-start dancing, then went to the studio, to which I would go, to learn rocking dance, where kazuki was also dancing around at backward.

TDM

Who was your coach?

kazuki

s**t kingz 〜 with verve 〜凸凹興業のTACさんです。

I learned dancing by TAC-san of Bumpy Industry, where I saw noppo. Then we went to house dance class of TooRu-san together, where my other friends would go.

After that we got addicted to house dance, and set up a team with him at high school. But we ran the team only for competitons, then we had contact one month before it, and practiced. Except that we did dance for each. For the three years, we ran the team once a half year. (haha)

I had not met noppo before I graduated from high school, though our old friend suggested us “I am going to LA so that you come with me and join us?”, whose team was D-BLAST. As I went there and saw noppo again, then, “are you there again!?”.(haha)

We have been dancing together since we met at rocking dance lessons.

noppo

I have been dancing with YUKI of D-BLAST , who was a motive for me to get started dance. We had been dancing together, which was long time ago before I met kazuki.

I was doing in D-BLAST and retired it as kazuki joined in Tokyo☆kids.

At that time, we talked “we want to do something new, don’t we?”.

kazuki

And then I also retired Tokyo☆kids, whose night was the first show of s**t kingz.

oguri

I have started dancing the end of the first year at high school. At first, I went to a beginners’ class at Studio HEARTS and had lessons by Kagiya, Ricky and so on…, at which I learned various sorts of dances such as rocking and punk dance.

After I entered a university and participated in dancing society of Waseda University, “W.U.B”, and I went to the studio, HEARTS again.

I come to get interested in HIP HOP since I learned it by YOU-KI, so that I went to L.A and also had a concern about muscle training. (haha)

Then I met kazuki at act dancers of ‘a-nation’. And we saw him several times at clubs then we proposed “why don’t you set up a team?”, whose name was Bluebird.

That was the first year of my undergraduate, which I also started to learn jazz dance and ballet at another studio, WING. I had been learned by Kaoru Harada, Midori Saito, Shin-nosuke and Kobayashi, and I performed at recital.

TDM

Did you hesitate to do jazz dance or ballet because you have already done street dance?

oguri

I have been longing for backup dancers, then I asked YOU-KI for that and he recommended me do jazz dance and join in a dance studio, WING. I was afraid to go there. As I performed in Bluebird, kazuki putted us forward “Let’s make another team!”.That was s**t kingz.

TDM

How did your parents say when you graduated from universities and chose the way to be a dancer?

oguri

My parents complained at first but I did not want to work, like ordinary people. They nowadays cheer us up. As Shaun Evaristo* came to Japan, he stayed at my parents’ house.

Having a meal, he told my parents that he evaluated our performances so that they have been changing their thoughts for us little bit since then.

My parents asked him “Can dancers make their livings?” Shaun mentioned them “They are going to have jobs more, then it should be okay.”.

We did not imagine that we were going to overseas at that time, but we could run European tour October last year. Now our parents come to trust us because what Shaun said comes true.

Can we pick up how the European tour went after all? And, shoji-kun next please.

shoji

I have started dancing at its society at my university.

I had two part time jobs then I could not go to dance school, so that I practiced dancing with my friends or the society.

Actually I have been doing dance reggae mainly. (haha) I had performed with another girl in a team, “copastique”, for four years.

When I was fourth grade at my undergraduate, I astonished by a house dancing team, “ace” I have never seen as such, which was the first time that I met noppo and kazuki.

kazuki

Ahh…. may I disturb? (haha)

We could performed there, recommended by my friends older, where was highly secured and posh. As we sat down at the floor, staff advised “please stand up” or we could not lean against the wall.

We found someone at the center of the floor, who danced, got dressed in gorgeous costume, and sweat so much. It was shoji-kun. (haha)

shoji

s**t kingz 〜 with verve 〜そうそう (笑)。

Yes, yes. (haha) I have known them, but they did not know me and may think “who is he?” I met them at the event on that impression, and we got familiar with more.

After that, I performed with kazuki in a team, CAT-TUN which included five boys and got dressed in bathrobe with cuddling cats. (haha)

Actually I was the first member of Tokyo☆kids whose members were MAIKO-san, MIKEY, Show‐hey, kazuki and me until the second show.

I retired Tokyo☆kids since I got a job. s**t kingz has started half year past since then.

I had many friends who were exchange students from overseas, because I went to Kanda University of International Studies. One of them asked me “do you know GEN2?”, which was Shaun Evaristo’s dance crew. YouTube was not appeared then, but I found its HP provided their performances’video at which I got really amazed. Then I realised I wanted to do their dancing style, and changed my dance direction from reggae to its style.

oguri

Therefore, we follow him as we all like him.

TDM

What did he attract you all?

shoji

First, I thought “we have never watched such a show!”

Grouping, using Hiphop, and organising interesting structure… dancing itself was into the music meaning. On the other hand, street dance in Japan generally tends to value on beat. Then I got interested in his style.

oguri

For me, before I saw Shaun, I had known a choreographer, Marty Kudelka**, by a featured program of Justin Timberlake, MTV. I went to L.A. to have his lessons when I was eighteen years old and checked his works on YouTube so that I got addicted to his style.

After that, kazuki told me about Shaun and checked, which has evolved Marty’s style more, smoothly but brisk, I thought “what a cool his body moving style is!” and got addicted more.

I did not concern others’ dancing, thus, I rarely watched a video recorded my practicing dancing for feedback. But, Shoji-kun told me about Shaun, then I got addicted to his dancing so that I repeated his dancing video many times.

Then I came to really like dancing rather than before because I found that “Dance can be broadened more”. I understood dance as cool representing “what is cool” though more deep inside.

noppo

When I was the third grade of high school, one of the D-BLAST members took me to L.A. then I got impressed by the dance there.

I met a rival who was the same age as me and felt that I could not be cast behind him! Then I took Shane Sparks***’ lesson which he took.

His style was the Hip-hop, but I realised to accept that dance might include its choreography of other pops and suit for lyrics, regardless of existing style.

As I watched Shaun then I astonished “He can do anything like a freakish person!”

僕がL.A.

Except me, the other members had taken his lessons before I went to L.A. I went there, I envied them because they have already been familiar with him. (haha)

Oguri went back to Japan before me, but Shan suggested me to participate in workshop hold at San Francisco by The company which ran by Shaun. Then we took six hours to get to San Francisco with two others.

Shaun put me up at his house while I took part in the workshop, then we got familiar with.

After that, two other members went back to Japan, then I got sad so that I stayed at Shaun’s house very often. He is one year older than me and likes Japanese Sake. We drank every night. (haha)

After while, Shaun went to Korea republic for a business trip and then he called me that “I am going to Japan to hold workshops. But I do not have a place to stay at!”. I called three other members and oguri put him up and managed to have his workshop in Japan.

I regretted that I could not have his lessons in Japan. Then I booked a ticked to get back to Japan earlier than I planned.

In Japan, we got along with Shaun so that we saw him well. Until then, I was little bit scared of him. (haha)

Since then, you have established your own style as s**t kingz. You went to Europe to run workshops, but how did you have a motive to there?

oguri

First, Ril(?), a Swedish girl, invited us to Europe. We did not know, though she told a Japanese girl about us as she met her by chance so that they had watched our early time works on YouTube.

Also she had been awaited for the moment to invite us. She told us to run our workshop in Europe when we were in U.S.A.

It may be a turning point for Japanese dancers so that RIE, a Japanese dancer, also invited to teach dancing there. I think they will invite other Japanese dancers more and more.

We performed at BODYROCK, where you can seldom take part unless you won some other competitions, since invitation was necessary.

We did not have a connection with the event thus we cannot imagine to perform there. Meanwhile, Elm, the representative of Boogie Zone converted from Studio HEARTS, visited Japan and told us “if you want to join BODYROCK, I could contact to the staff.”, which he connected us to the host, Anna. She had already known us because she watched our shows with Kenoe and offered us to perform there.

She asked us “Show or competition, which one would you perform at?”, then we discussed. First we agreed to perform at the show, as we valued on making someone enjoy at shows and its structural method was not suited for competition.

But, kazuki proposed that “we are going to perform there, let us come in the competition.” as he felt. Then we all agreed with him. (haha)

We watched Shaun’s videos many times, once he featured at the event, Busta Groove, in BODYROCK where still remained the same.

Thus, it was a special place for me to perform there. I was so happy.

As you decided to be in the competition, did you change your direction of choreography when you created your shows in Japan?

shoji

No, we did not. We were working on as we were thus we did not do that.

But we practiced for it very well.

noppo

We did nothing other than our ordinary choreography.

Every time choreographing, we have a person who inspires us, and at that time, it was an old dancer, Gene Kelly*****, which we wanted to include an element, a sort of musical, in our work. Though we did not prospect the choreography for competition at all.

Gene Kelly(ジーン・ケリー):

*****Gene Kelly:
Gene Kelly was famous for Singin' in the Rain, an actor, representing their belonging company with Fred Astaire. You can check their performance in That's Entertainment, Part2 in 1976.

We want to take over existing images.

TDM

Basically, how do you choreograph for shows?

oguri

At first, we choose music. On the other hand, sometimes we have images or what we want to do, but it is hard to suit them for it. As we find music amazes us, we choreograph matching with it.

kazuki

Though, latest works come to be little bit different from them.

shoji

Yes. We inspire an image by music and choreograph as a concert from its beginning to the end.

oguri

Nevertheless, we want to show as “we do dance on this music!”, which is well-known but is reluctant to use for dance.

shoji

Yup, yup. It is good for us to perform by music nobody uses but is famous.

oguri

Our latest work is choreographed on music of JET on iTunes’ commercial, which you may know but none dances on it, then you might get surprised.

noppo

We performed on R&B as you fixed an image for us. To take over it, we dance on such rock music then you may enjoy our performance.

shoji

Depending on person, he/she says they like s**t kingz’s first or second work. Because we want to develop our performances show by show, we do not do the same kinds of shows.

noppo

We would like to work on and take advantages of house, jazz and reggae since we have trained such various styles. (hehe)

shoji

I have never performed reggae in s**t kingz’s works. (hehe) Then let us show our reggae. (hehe)

What we have gained as individuals are reflected to our team works. We want to try one-man show in the future!

TDM

Did you have any changes after you won at the competition?

oguri

Nope, we did not have drastic changes.

shoji

Of course it is a big memory, but we do not feel “we WON!” so much. I realised “we stood and danced on that stage” when I found our performances was uploaded on YouTube the next day.

noppo

I recognised we could do as much when we practiced.

I got filled with a feeling of achievement of the practice rather than its result, which we prepared very well and were pointed with each other to polish. I felt “well-done for practice!” (hehe)

TDM

Awesome. What do you do or imagine in the future?

oguri

I want to try s**t kingz’s one-man show, which many people surrounding us recommend.

shoji

We want to show each work of us for one hour, not within five minutes as usual. Many people ask us “what do you do next?”, though what we have done so far is beyond what we thought.

We did not imagine to run workshops overseas, or won at competition, so that we do not catch up to next point; what we should do.

oguri

Supported by my friends, I want to do what we really want to do.

TDM

We are looking forward to your one-man show. And we think you are lucky such experiences as you are young so that we want you to expand your works and enjoy yourselves on your own speed. Finally, could you give a message for TDM readers?

noppo

Working in a group, you can perform well reflecting what individual acquires by his/her own perspectives. On the contrary, a dancer is to perform as an individual, then, what you have been obtained by groups can be applied for your own performances.

I want you to pursue not only dance (or one thing), but also others in which you are interested such as movie or arts. I have learned the importance of individual broaden perspectives.

shoji

Exactly, noppo provides us choreography, expressing “Here is one of a Disney movies’ scenes”.

noppo

I really like Disney and Ghibli works!!

oguri

For me, I am really lucky for working on dance. I spent a lot of time and money on it. I lost something with devoting dance though I did not waste them.

I do not concern with only doing dance, and want to find other hint. I think I can enjoy more with expanding my world, reflecting that into my dance to enhance and always remaining humble.

kazuki

I have learned by doing dance, when you do not give up, you can do anything.

At first, you think it is impossible to perform such dance, your practice makes it possible to accept the choreography, spending fifteen minutes or more and you can enjoy yourself in performing it on stage. Come to think that, it is really amazing to become to achieve something impossible to do, not only dance for us, but also sports for athletes.

If you have what you really like, you have to do it without giving up. If you cannot do that, it is not timing for you then you do not have to do that at present.

shoji

Many young people may bother about their future whether working at company or not, I think when you are worried about that, you have to choose working in a company. If you decide to dance, you do not bother.

For me I bothered, then I worked at a company for two years, though it was good for me. I do not think that was absent, which I could accept a lot of things as a human being and pay back to my present.

While working there, I kept dancing since I really like it. I think that you can decide whenever you really want to do.

I have decided to dance as a professional then I have no other jobs. You think it is impossible for you to do only dance, you should work other business with doing dance. I guess you have to wait for the moment to challenge to dance as a professional or trust yourselves “I should do it!”.

Working at a company, you have responsibility and cannot schedule on your personal business. Though you can keep dancing if you really want to do, under any circumstances. Please go on your way that you think necessary. Good luck!

TDM

We think that many young people concern same sort of things. Thank you very much indeed for your message.
